Taipei, March 6 (CNA) The two sides of the Taiwan Strait have not been related or connected to each other since 1949, the Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) said Monday.

The Cabinet-level council responsible for Taiwan's policy toward China was responding to reports that China has drafted its 11th five-year social and economic development plan which clearly declares for the first time that Taiwan is the People's Republic of China's "sacred and inalienable territory." "No matter how China tries to define the situation, the two sides of the Taiwan Strait have been unrelated to each other since 1949. This is the cross-strait status quo and a matter of fact that cannot be altered," said a senior MAC official who preferred anonymity.

He reiterated that the Republic of China on Taiwan is an independent sovereign state whose sovereignty belongs to its 23 million people and that only its people can decide any change to its status quo.
