Washington, Dec. 5 (CNA) Although it is too early to say what impact the results of Taiwan's "three-in-one" elections will have on cross-Taiwan relations, Taiwan voters will continue to request that their elected leaders promote cross-strait peace and stability, a U.S. State Department deputy spokesman said Monday. "As far as the elections go -- obviously, they're an internal matter for Taiwan -- we certainly see in them a reflection of the strength and vitality of democracy in Taiwan, " Adam Ereli also said at a regular press briefing.

In Saturday's local elections, the opposition Kuomintang won 14 of the 23 mayor and magistrate posts up for grabs, as well as a majority of the seats in the council and township chief elections.

In response to a question regarding what impact the election results will have on cross-strait relations, Ereli said that it's a little too early to tell. "But I would say that we certainly hope and are confident that the people of Taiwan will continue to hold their elected leaders, from whatever party, accountable for promoting peace and stability across the strait in keeping with Taiwan's interests, " he added.

Asked whether the United States is concerned about a possible split within Taiwan's ruling Democratic Progressive Party in the wake of the elections, Ereli declined to give any comment, saying only that "the progress and process of internal Taiwanese politics is something that we don't opine about, and it's a matter for the Taiwanese people to decide."
