KMT WINS 14, DPP 6 OF 23 CITY/COUNTY GOVERNMENT POSTS

    Taipei, Dec. 3 (CNA) The opposition Kuomintang (KMT) defeated the ruling Democratic Progressive (DPP) by winning 14 out of 23 city and county government chief executive posts in Saturday's "three-in-one" elections, outnumbering the DPP's six.

    The People First Party (PFP) and the New Party won one county each, with the remaining one going to an independent candidate.

    Voter turnout was 66.22 percent. Four years ago the turnout was

66.45 percent, according to the Central Election Commission.

    The KMT garnered 4,523,775 votes or 50.96 percent of all valid votes, and the DPP won 3,724,290 votes or 41.95 percent. The PFP won 98,964 votes or 1.11 percent, and Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) got 100,243 votes or 1.13 percent. The New Party won 17,359 votes or 0.20 percent, and independents got 412,511 votes or 4.65 percent.

    In the city and council elections, the KMT won 408 out of the 901 seats up for grabs, with the DPP getting 192, followed by the PFP with 31 and the TSU with 11. Independents scored 256 seats, with the remaining two going to other minor parties.

    Of all 319 townships (including smaller towns called "hsiangs") , the KMT won 173 and the DPP a dismal 35. The PFP won three townships and another minor party won one. The remaining 107 went to independents.
