Taipei, Oct. 19 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense (MND) will strive to forge military cooperation and exchanges with neighboring countries through official or non-official channels, Minister of National Defense Lee Jye said Wednesday.
Lee made the remarks while delivering a report at the Legislative Yuan's Defense Committee on the MND's work agenda and budget plans for 2006.
With a view to upgrading Taiwan's international visibility and presence, Lee said, the MND will pull out all the stops to foster cooperative ties with peripheral countries and seek opportunities for observing each other's military exercise programs.
Lee further said the military will continue to promote a volunteer service system, with volunteer soldiers accounting for 60 percent of all military personnel by 2008.
