Taipei, Oct. 19 (CNA) An ROC Navy anti-submarine S-70C helicopter with three crew members aboard crashed into waters off the Tsoying naval base in southern Taiwan Wednesday, killing one officer and leaving the other two missing, military authorities said.
The body of co-pilot Lt. Commander Yang Shun-yuan was recovered some 45 minutes after the anti-submarine helicopter went down 34 nautical miles from the Tsoying naval base near Kaohsiung, the Navy General Headquarters said in a news release.
A search was under way for the other two crew members, identified as Navy Lieutenant Sung Yu-shao and Master Sergeant Huang Hsien-hua, the statement said.
Initial investigations showed that the S-70C might have developed mechanical problems on its way back to a shipboard base after completing a nighttime training mission, the statement said, adding that the real cause of the accident is still under investigations.
The Coast Guard Administration said it has sent two patrol vessels to assist in the search and rescue mission.
