Kinmen, Oct. 15 (CNA) The military will continue to dispose of outdated ammunition, land mines and vacant barracks on Kinmen to help boost development and tourism on the frontline island, a military official said Saturday.

Wu Ta-peng, commander of the Kinmen defense command, pointed out that the command has since April shipped 3,300 tons of unserviceable ammunition from Kinmen to Taiwan for disposal.

While 1,800 tons of outdated ammunition has been destroyed so far on Kinmen, the command is planning to dispose of another 1,000 tons next year to reduce the danger to local residents, Wu said.

Meanwhile, Wu continued, the military completed in May an inspection of the minefields on Kinmen and decided to funnel NT$470 million starting next year to clear the land mines over a three-year period.

As to the vacant barracks, Wu said the military will release all 240 unused barracks later this year and return the properties to their original owners.

Wu made the remarks during a military parade held as part of the National Day celebrations.
