Taipei, Oct. 13 (CNA) Taiwan's coast guard has no intention of becoming a " second naval force" during wartime nor is such a move supported by law, regardless of what a lawmaker might think, ROC Coast Guard Administration (CGA) authorities said Thursday.
Noting that the CGA was established to protect the seas off Taiwan, maintain order along the nation's coastline and ensure national security, CGA officials said that currently, the CGA is incapable of playing a defensive role or being a combat force supporting the Ministry of National Defense.
CGA officials denied an allegation by an unidentified member of the Legislative Yuan who said on Oct. 7 that the CGA had contingency plans to become a "second navy" of the Republic of China should war erupt in the Taiwan Strait.
The CGA, with its current manpower and equipment, could not be transformed into a fighting force should the national security situation change, CGA officials said.
