Taipei, Sept. 24 (CNA) Facing China's agressive military buildup, Taiwan's should strengthen its defenses to counter China's aggressive military buildup, Vice Minister of National Defense Michael M. Tsai said Saturday.

In a seminar organized by the World Taiwanese Congress, the vice defense minister said China budgets US$30 billion for miltiary buildup every year, in addition to secret military spending of US$60 billion.

In light of the fact that China is under no military threat, its aggressive miltary buildup has belied its claims of peaceful emergence, Tsai said.

In order to counter China's threat, Taiwan has to strengthen its defenses by acquiring the package of arms offered to sell by the U. S., Tsai went on.

His opinion was shared by Kurt Campell, senior vice president of the Washington-based think tank, the Center for Strategic and International Studies.

Campell said at the same seminar that the U.S., preoccupied with the crisis in Iraq, has not paid enough attention to the military threat posed by China in Asia and Taiwan should raise the US general public's awareness of this.
