Taipei, Sept. 21 (CNA) Any possible help from the United States has never been a part of the Republic of China military's combat plans, a senior Ministry of National Defense (MND) official said Wednesday.
Gen. Hu Chen-pu, director of the MND's political warfare department, made the remarks after Edward Ross, principal director of the Security Cooperation Operations under the U.S. Defense Security Cooperation Agency, said the previous day that if Taiwan is not willing to defend itself, the United States cannot assist in defending Taiwan.
Hu said the ROC military's combat plans have consistently been based on the concept of the island "fighting on its own" and help from the U.S. has never been included.
Ross made the remarks while addressing a session of the fourth U.S.-Taiwan defense industry conference held in San Diego Sept. 19-20. He criticized the slow increase in Taiwan defense budget.
