Taipei, Sept. 17 (CNA) Foreign Minister Tan Sun Chen thanked the leaders of nine allies and Fiji Saturday for speaking out for Taiwan at the United Nations.
The leaders of the nine allies either praised Taiwan's economic achievements and democracy or prodded the U.N. to admit Taiwan as a member at the United Nations Summit of World Leaders that concluded in New York Friday.
Although their speech did not help Taiwan's bid to enter the U.N. this year, which had already been quashed after the U.N. General Committee decided Sept. 13 not to put it on the agenda of the U.N., they have helped voice Taiwan's desire to reach out to the international community, Chen said.
The Minister said he especially took heart at the speech of Fiji
President Josefa Iloila, who said the world should develop ties with
China and Taiwan in parallel. Iloila's remarks bode well for ties
between the two countries, although there are no diplomatic ties
between Taiwan and Fiji, Chen said.
The leaders of the nine allies who spoke out for Taiwan were Kiribati President Anote Tong, Tuvalu Prime Minister Maatia Toafa, Honduras Foreign Minister Mario Fortin, Palau President Tommy Remengesau, Sao Tome and Principe President Fradique de Menenes, Saint Christopher and Nevis Prime Minister Denzil Douglas, Nauru President Ludwig Scotty, Marshall Islands President Kessai Note and Solomon Islands Prime Minister Sir Allan Kemakeza.
