Taipei, Sept. 9 (CNA) Two soldiers were killed in an explosion at a weaponry factory in the southern Taiwan county of Kaohsiung Friday morning, the Ministry of National Defense (MND) said.
Initial investigations revealed that a machine used in the production of ammunition blew up at the military-run factory in Kaohsiung County's Tashu township, killing two soldiers and injuring one other, an MND spokesman said.
The deceased were identified as Chiu Kuo-chen, a sergeant first class, and Hsu Ming-cheng, a staff sergeant. The injured soldier, identified as Su Ching-kuo, also a staff sergeant, was rushed to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, the spokesman said. "We feel deep regret over the accident, " the spokesman said, adding that the ministry will assist the families of the deceased soldiers in handling the aftermath and spare no efforts in treating the injured.
Moreover, the spokesman said, the MND has formed a special task force to investigate the cause of the fatal accident.
The blast came just two days after a string of explosions rocked an ammunition depot on the Taiwan-held frontline island of Matsu, which lies closer to China's Fujian Province than to Taiwan. No one was injured, and the military is still investigating the explosions.
On Wednesday, Army Capt. Sun Chi-hsiang was killed when an armored vehicle suddenly accelerated during an operation at a military base in central Taiwan. Investigators are still probing the case.
