Taipei, Sept. 2 (CNA) China's so-called "united front" strategy, with which China has been threatening Taiwan militarily while trying to divide Taiwan society, is aimed at forcing Taiwan to give up its sovereignty, President Chen Shui-bian claimed Friday.
Speaking at a ceremony in which outstanding soldiers were cited, the president urged the men and women in uniform, as well as the general public, to beware of military and psychological threats from across the Taiwan Strait.
He said China's enactment of its anti-secession law in March, which expressly calls for "non-peaceful means" to solve cross-strait disputes should Taiwan move toward independence, and a Chinese general's threat to use nuclear arms, are clear indications of China's attempts to use force to achieve its ultimate goal of unifying Taiwan and China.
On the other hand, the president pointed out that in order to give an impression internationally that it is a peace-loving country, China has spared no efforts to lure Taiwan's opposition politicians and civic groups.
For example, China has allowed duty-free imports of Taiwan fruit and offered a pair of pandas as gifts to the people of Taiwan. "These are aimed at misleading the world and demoralizing Taiwan, " he claimed.
In the face of China's maneuvering, the president called on the military and the public to realize China's militaristic nature, which aims to force Taiwan to abandon its sovereignty and dignity.
He said the government will counter China's strategy by vigorously maintaining the nation's liberal democracy as well as its sovereignty and dignity.
The government will work hard to ensure the maximum long-term interest of the people under a framework of peace, democracy and equality, he said.
