BALANCED CROSS-STRAIT TIES KEY TO SHAPING OF NEW PACIFIC ORDER: CHEN

    Taipei, Aug. 11 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian said Thursday that a balanced relationship between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait is the key to the formation of a "new peaceful Pacific order."

    Chen made the remarks at a news conference introducing the soon-to-be-inaugurated Democratic Pacific Union (DPU) , which was conceived by Vice President Annette Lu to boost cooperation among Pacific Rim democracies.

    In his keynote speech, Chen said he is convinced that only a normalized, constructive cross-strait relationship based on the principles of parity and pragmatism can sustain Asia-Pacific prosperity and advancement.
