Taipei, July 20 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense is studying the latest report on China's military power released by the U.S. Department of Defense Tuesday, military spokesman Liu Chih-jian said Wednesday.
Commenting on the annual Pentagon report, Liu said that major challenges to Taiwan's deterrence capabilities are: China's military build-up tipping the military balance against Taiwan; Taiwan's declining military budget; and the bill on a special arms procurement plan remaining blocked at the opposition-dominated Legislative Yuan.
Commenting on the Pentagon report's notion that China's military build-up is growing at a pace that is tipping the military balance against Taiwan and Taiwan has failed to keep pace, Liu said it is true that military clout across the Taiwan Strait is unbalanced, but it is too early to speculate that the two sides' military power is at a ratio of 3:1 or lower. "This needs further study and the defense ministry would rather not comment on it at present," Liu added.
