Beijing, July 10 (CNA) U.S. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice said in Beijing Sunday that the United States sees contact between the Chinese government and Taiwan as a "good thing, " expressing the hope that Beijing can also have contact with the island's duly elected government.

Rice made the comments in response to questions raised by the Central News Agency at a press conference held before the conclusion of her China visit.

Saying that she had discussions with Chinese officials on Taiwan issues during the visit, Rice reiterated the Bush administration's stance regarding the "one China" policy, the three communiques signed between the United States and China, and the U.S. obligations under the Taiwan Relations Act.

She also said that Washington does not want to see either side of the Taiwan Strait change the current status quo in the strait.

The United States does not support Taiwan moving forward toward independence and is concerned about the balance of military power in the Taiwan Strait, the secretary further said, adding that the United States has told China not to take any military action to provoke Taiwan.
