Taipei, June 2 (CNA) The opposition Kuomintang (KMT) offered NT$50 million (US$1.59 million) Thursday for information leading to the arrest of the man who shot President Chen Shui-bian and Vice President Annette Lu March 19 last year.
Encouraged by the news that former FBI Deputy Director Mark Felt confirmed Tuesday that he was the source of the Washington Post, dubbed "deep throat" by the paper when it broke the news about the Watergate scandal in 1972, KMT spokesman Chang Jung-kung said his party will give NT$50 million for Taiwan's "deep throat" who can come out with information leading to the discovery of the truth of the 319 shooting.
The Watergate scandal brought down U.S. President Richard Nixon in 1974.
The spokesman for the KMT, which suspects the shooting to be a politically-motivated scheme coined to help Chen win re-election, said his party is worried that the "truth" of the shooting will never come out after the United Daily News said Thursday that a police task force charged with investigating the incident is ready to wrap up its probe.
Chang said his party will start collecting public donations for the rewards and announced Post Office account 19839620 for receiving donations.
