Taipei, May 14 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu said Saturday that Chinese President Hu Jintao should hear the voice of the Taiwan people now that the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has won the most seats in the just concluded ad hoc National Assembly election.

Lu made the remarks after the DPP won more than 40 percent of the ballots to take 127 out of 300 seats up for grabs in the election. The seats in the mission-oriented National Assembly were allotted to 12 political parties and groups in proportion to the number of ballots each garnered.

Lu said she must thank the tests given by the other side of the Taiwan Strait, saying that every test from the Communist Party of China (CPC) has proved that democratic Taiwan is correct and victorious in the end.

Lu said the result of the election has vindicated President Chen Shui-bian's insistence that "the Republic of China is a sovereign and independent country, that Taiwan belongs to 23 million Taiwan people and that any change of the status quo must have the prior consent of the Taiwan people."

She said she was sure China has heard the voice of the Taiwan people because of the election.

Lu made the remarks when she met with Presidential Office Secretary-General Yu Shyi-kun, Premier Frank Hsieh, DPP Chairman Su Tseng-chang and others at the DPP headquarters to celebrate the victory.

Lu congratulated Su for his tireless efforts to drum up voter support, and she also congratulated Yeh Chu-lan, who ranked top among the DPP nominees and might become the first female speaker of the National Assembly.
