DPP, KMT SEIZE 80% OF VOTES IN NATIONAL ASSEMBLY ELECTION

    Taipei, May 14 (CNA) The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and opposition Kuomintang (KMT) together seized 80 percent of the votes in Saturday's National Assembly election, according to tallies released by the Central Election Commission.

    Both parties are in favor of the constitutional amendment package to be considered by the ad hoc, 300-member National Assembly.

    The DPP garnered 42.52 percent of the votes, representing 127 assembly seats, while the KMT gained 38.92 percent, or 117 seats.

    The Taiwan Solidarity Union won just 7.05 percent of votes, or 21 seats, while the People First Party got a dismal 6.11 percent of votes, or a mere 18 seats.

    The 150-person union led by Jhang Ya-jhong garnered 1.68 percent, or five seats; the Chinese People Party gained 1.08 percent, or three seats; the New Party won 0.88 percent, or three seats; the Non-Partisan Solidarity Union got 0.65 percent, or two seats; the Peasant Party seized 0.4 percent, or one seat; the Taiwan Independence Party seized 0.3 percent, or one seat; the Civil Party got 0.22 percent, or one seat; and the 20-person union led by Wang Ting-sing won 0.19 percent, or one seat.
