Taipei, May 10 (CNA) Taiwan will not rule out any possibility in terms of its future relations with China, with both unification with China and independence for Taiwan being possible options, President Chen Shui-bian said recently in an interview with the German daily Suddeutsche Zeitung.

The president said only the 23 million people of Taiwan have the right to choose the future of the country and its relationship with China.

He reiterated that the Republic of China is an independent, sovereign state and that its sovereignty belongs to its 23 million people.

It is the status quo across the Taiwan Strait that the ROC and the People's Republic of China are two separate countries independent of each other, he added.

Comparing the situation to that of West and East Germany before their unification, Chen noted that West and East Germany were two independent countries, both of which were members of the United Nations before they became one country.

However, he pointed out, the PRC does not recognize the ROC and does not allow the ROC to participate in international organizations such as the United Nations, which he said will not help unification of the two sides but drive them further apart.
