CCP DISARMING TAIWAN-TARGETED MISSILES AN OPEN QUESTION: KMT

Taipei, April 16 (CNA) It is uncertain whether opposition Kuomintang (KMT) Chairman Lien Chan will urge China to dismantle its missiles targeting Taiwan during his planned visit to the mainland, a party official said Saturday.

KMT spokesman Chang Jung-kung made the remarks in response to questions from journalists on whether Lien will touch on this issue during his planned meeting with Chinese President Hu Jintao, who is also the general-secretary of the Chinese Communist Party (CCP).

Concerning the reports that Lien might sign an agreement with Hu to end the so called "KMT-CCP civil war" which lasted several decades on the mainland before the KMT retreated to Taiwan in 1949, Chang said he had no idea about this.

Noting that the KMT has long promoted benign interactions between the two sides of Taiwan Strait, Chang said when Lien visits China, he will insist on upholding the country's dignity and maintaining an equal footing with China while promoting cross-strait peace. "His visit will help promote the welfare of the people of Taiwan," Chang claimed.

Chang stressed that Lien's upcoming China visit will focus on the concept and framework of peace, and many topics can be discussed.

Asked whether Lien will touch on the issue of China's dismantling hundreds of missiles targeting Taiwan, Chang said, "It depends on the situation at that moment."
