Taipei, April 13 (CNA) Vice Minister of National Defense Huo Shou-yeh said Wednesday that, as stated in the Republic of China Constitution, the armed forces' mission is to defend the nation's security.

Huo made the remarks in an interpellation session at the Legislative Yuan, during which opposition Kuomintang Legislator Ting Shou-chung asked whether the ROC military would fight for Taiwan independence.

Huo said that the ROC armed forces have always maintained their combat readiness for any possible military threats from beyond Taiwan's borders, adding that the armed forces firmly abide by the principle of getting no involvement in non-military affairs, such as politics.

The issue of Taiwan independence is an internal political issue that should be solved by political means, he said, adding that the ROC military's obligation is to defend Taiwan against any external threats regardless of the reasons behind those threats.
