Taipei, March 8 (CNA) Premier Frank Hsieh said Tuesday he will not hesitate to support the proposal to phase out the general provisions of the existing Republic of China Constitution if Beijing passes a law that allows it to attack Taiwan anytime and that makes Taiwan a part of the People's Republic of China.

Hsieh made the remarks at a Legislative Yuan interpellation session where opposition Kuomintang (KMT) Legislator Su Chi asked Hsieh about his stance on constitutional amendments.

Hsieh said that each major domestic party has its own fundamental stances on the constitutional amendment issue and that respecting the existing ROC Constitution is a consensus of the ruling and opposition parties.

While the opposition KMT and its "pan-blue alliance" ally -- the People First Party -- think that the existing ROC Constitution is good, Hsieh said the ruling Democratic Progressive Party thinks that the constitution needs to be amended and updated in order to meet current realities.

Hsieh said that he personally supports the proposal to revise certain provisions of the ROC Constitution. As to the extent of the revisions, Hsieh said it will depend on the state of relations across the Taiwan Strait.
