PRESIDENT ADMIRES PROGRESS IN 319 SHOOTING PROBE

    Taipei, March 7 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian expressed admiration Monday for a special team of prosecutors and police detectives for their efforts in probing the assassination attempt against him on the eve of the March 20 presidential election last year, according to a statement issued through his office.

    As the victim of the assassination attempt, the statement says, Chen and Vice President Annette Lu -- who was also wounded in the incident -- respect the findings and hope the team will continue its probe until the whole truth is out.

    The statement was issued in the wake of a claim made by the special investigation team earlier in the day that it has identified a key suspect who might have been the person that shot the president. The suspect apparently committed suicide March 28 last year before the police could track down him.
