EU MIGHT LIFT CHINA ARMS EMBARGO IN FIRST HALF 2005: FOREIGN MINISTRY

2004-12-09 19:04:55

Taipei, Dec. 9 (CNA) Ministry of Foreign Affairs officials said Thursday that the European Union is likely to lift its arms embargo against China during the first half of next year and that Taiwan is closely monitoring the development.

Foreign ministry spokesman Michel Lu said the EU might make the decision in light of the close economic and trade relations between China and the EU and the constant exchanges of visits between their officials.

Yang Maysing, the head of ministry's research and planning board, said Taiwan and the United States will suffer the greatest impact if the arms embargo is lifted.

Yang said Taiwan should join forces with other countries to continue to pressure the EU not to lift the ban and work with Asia-Pacific neighbors to call the attention of the international community to the threat posed by China's military buildup to regional peace.
