VICE PRESIDENT CALLS FOR PUBLIC'S SUPPORT FOR NAME-CHANGE PROPOSAL

2004-12-07 16:27:41

Taipei, Dec. 7 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu on Tuesday urged the public to support the proposal advocated by President Chen Shui-bian to change the names of the Republic of China's foreign missions and state-own enterprises.

The vice president said that the move to include the word "Taiwan" in the official names of the overseas offices and state-run companies will avoid confusion with those of mainland China and conform to the real situation.

Although implementing the name-change policy will be a difficult process, Lu urged the public to unite behind the government to overcome the difficulties.

On U.S. State Department deputy spokesman Adam Ereli's remarks that Washington is not supportive of the name-change proposal, Lu said that this is the result of pressure from Beijing and that Taiwan needs to make further efforts in seeking Washington's understanding.

Lu said that as a sovereign and independent country, Taiwan needs a name that conforms to reality.

She also said that at a time of globalization, any enterprises competing internationally will encounter difficulties if they use the word "China" or "Chinese" in their name. She expressed the hope that the public and the enterprises will support President Chen's name-change campaign.

As to the costs to state-owned companies of implementing the name-change policy, Lu said the companies "should look at the issue with a longer-term view." "If we stick to using the word 'China' or 'Chinese, ' the fruits of years of our efforts will be taken over by Beijing," she said.
