Taipei, June 21 (CNA) Prevention of war, defense of territory and anti-terrorism reaction are the three pillars of the country's security, Minister of National Defense Lee Jye said Monday.
Speaking at a luncheon with journalists, the minister, who assumed his post only a month ago, said prevention of war depends on contact with mainland China and deterring Beijing from starting a war. The armed forces will improve its combat capability with training and advanced weapons, and minimize damage in case of a war by use of pre-warning systems and proper reactions.
He also made a pitch for the ministry's request for an arms purchase worth NT$610.8 billion (US$18.23 billion) , saying it is vital for bolstering the armed forces' combat capability.
