2004-05-04 23:16:00

Taipei, May 4 (CNA) There has been no ammunition, including rocket-propelled grenades, stolen from the armed forces and resold, although an army sergeant was found to be involved in an illegal weapons-selling ring busted Tuesday in southern Taiwan, according to a statement issued by the Ministry of National Defense (MND).

The statement, issued through the MND's Spokesman Office, said the sergeant, identified only by his family name of Cheng, was found associating with gangsters selling weapons in February. The airborne unit in southern Taiwan where he served provided tips to police that led to the crackdown on the ring led by Huang Teng-hui.

However, the unit has no unaccounted-for ammunition and although more than 10 privates and non-commissioned officers were questioned during the investigation, none of them were found to have been involved in the case apart from Cheng, according to the statement.
