PRESIDENT'S AIDE DENIES REPORT ABOUT ENVOYS TO BEIJING

2004-05-01 16:00:03

Taipei, May 1 (CNA) An aide to President Chen Shui-bian dismissed as "groundless" Saturday a report by Singapore newspaper the Straits Times that the president has tried to reach out to Beijing by offering to send envoys there to negotiate the contents of Chen's inaugural speech.

Huang Chih-fang, director of the Department of Public Affairs under the Presidential Office, cautioned the Straits Times against debasing itself into the mouthpiece of certain political forces as some news organizations in Hong Kong have done, noting that the newspaper has often published sensational but groundless stories about Taiwan's dealings with the mainland.

The Strait Times reported from Hong Kong Friday that Beijing has spurned Chen's offer to send envoys to Beijing to sound out its leaders' opinions about the contents of Chen's May 20 inaugural speech.
