REFERENDUM WILL NOT BRING DISASTER: VICE PRESIDENT
Taipei, Feb. 16 (CNA) Vice President Annette Lu offered her opinion recently in an interview with Cable Television of Hong Kong that Taiwan's planned referendum will not bring disaster to the Taiwan Strait.
Lu said that the referendum called by President Chen Shui-bian to coincide with the March 20 presidential election is aimed at seeking to establish a stable and peaceful framework for cross-strait interaction.
Only "dancing blindly in tune with Beijing's opposition to the referendum" will bring disaster to the Taiwan Strait, she claimed, adding that Beijing opposes the referendum because it is afraid Hong Kong, Macau, Xinjiang and Tibet will follow in Taiwan's footsteps.
Chen has put two questions to be voted on in the referendum: Should the government buy new anti-missile systems to counter Beijing's increasing build-up of missiles targeting Taiwan? And should the government open talks with Beijing to establish a peaceful and stable framework for cross-Taiwan Strait interaction?
