Taipei, March 19 (CNA) Opposition presidential candidate Lien Chan condemned violence Friday afternoon after President Chen Shui-bian and Vice President Annette Lu were shot and injured during canvassing in Tainan, southern Taiwan.

Lien announced the suspension of all campaign activities on the eve of the presidential election and urged the government to publish all information concerning the shooting.

Lien, in a press conference called at 5 p.m., also said that he had telephoned Chen but was told by a presidential aide that although the wound is not life threatening, he was not taking calls.

Both Chen, who is seeking re-election, and Lien, his sole rival, had originally planned to hold large-scale campaign rallies Friday night.
