Taipei, March 19 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian was reported Friday evening to be in stable condition and in no danger after being treated following an attack during an election campaign activity in Tainan City earlier the same day, hospital authorities said Thursday.
According to Chi Mei Foundation Medical Center President Chan Chi-shean, the wound suffered by Chen to his stomach -- some 11 cm in length, 2 cm in width and about 3 cm below the navel -- had been cleaned and stitched. "The president is fully conscious and in stable condition now, " Chan said, noting that the president had a pulse of 84 and a blood pressure of 142-74.
Chen also underwent a whole-body checkup following treatment, Chan said, adding that his chest was normal, while a metallic object similar to a bullet was discovered between Chen's clothing and his body. The bullet was taken away by investigation agents for examination.
At the same time, Vice President Annette Lu -- Chen's running mate in the March 20 presidential election -- received an injury to her right knee -- a minor bruise about one or two centimeters long.
According to Chiou I-jen, the shooting took place at 1:45 p.m. while Chen and Lu were soliciting votes in an open car while riding along the Wenhsien Road in southern Tainan City. "It was a gunshot," Chiou added.
