LEGISLATURE CALLS FOR U.N. HELP TO PUSH BEIJING TO REMOVE MISSILES

2003-12-30 17:22:44

Taipei, Dec. 30 (CNA) The opposition-controlled Legislative Yuan passed a resolution Tuesday urging the United Nations to demand that mainland China not target its hundreds of missiles at Taiwan.

The resolution was initiated by Legislator Wang Hsing-nan of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) and endorsed by 103 lawmakers from across the political spectrum.

The resolution demanded the administration ask the Republic of China's diplomatic allies to initiate a motion in the United Nations to press mainland China -- a U.N. member -- to remove its missile deployment against Taiwan.

Taiwan has to seek the help of its diplomatic allies in the United Nations to come up with such a proposal because it has been shut out of the United Nations since the U.N. General Assembly gave the China seat to the People's Republic of China at the expense of the ROC in 1971.

The resolution reads that the United Nations should demand its member -- the People's Republic of China -- abide by the U.N. charter, immediately remove its missiles aimed at Taiwan and never deploy them against Taiwan again.
