DPP PUSHING RESOLUTION APPEALING TO U.N. FOR M'LAND MISSILE WITHDRAWAL

Taipei, Dec. 18 (CNA) Legislators of the ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) said Thursday that they will urge the Legislative Yuan to pass a resolution appealing to the United Nations that mainland China withdraw its missiles aimed at Taiwan.
DPP Legislators Trong Chai and Wang Hsing-nan made the suggestion after the Legislature passed resolutions earlier this week demanding that Beijing withdraw its missiles deployed along its southeastern coast.
Noting that Beijing will not listen to these resolutions, both Chai and Wang said appealing to the United Nations will be more effective. Wang noted that both the European Union and the U.S. House of Representatives had earlier passed resolutions urging Beijing to withdraw its missiles aimed at Taiwan but that Beijing had turned a deaf ear. "When faced with a hegemonic nation like mainland China, one must go to the United Nations," Wang said.
Wang noted that one of the reasons the United Nations was founded was for the purpose of maintaining world peace and security. He said that Article 34 of the U.N. Charter states that the Security Council may investigate any dispute, or any situation that might lead to international friction or give rise to a dispute. If the Security Council begins an investigation, then mainland China as a party involved in the situation must give up related voting rights, Wang said.
Legislator Tsai also said that appealing to the United Nations would be a "wise" move as it would make the deployed mainland Chinese missiles into an international issue.
Wang said that they have begun to seek the signatures of their colleagues for endorsement of the resolution and that they have obtained the endorsement of more than a dozen legislators so far.
