BEIJING TO DEPLOY MORE MISSILES AGAINST TAIWAN: VICE PRESIDENT

2003-12-17 20:53:53

Taipei, Dec. 17 (CNA) The number of missiles deployed by Beijing targeting Taiwan will eventually increase to 880, Vice President Annette Lu said Wednesday.

Addressing a gathering of students at the National Kaohsiung University of Applied Sciences in southern Taiwan, Lu said that Beijing has so far deployed 496 missiles aimed at Taiwan and the number will continue to increase.

She urged the people of Taiwan to keep alert to Beijing's increasing missile threat and to pool together all possible forces around the world to cope with Beijing's bullying attitude toward Taiwan.

The vice president also urged the international community to condemn Beijing for intimidating Taiwan with missiles and military force and ask Beijing to dismantle the missiles targeting Taiwan as soon as possible.

Also, Lu said that President Chen Shui-bian said that a new constitution should be written for Taiwan because the current one was established in mainland China more than five decades ago and is outdated.

She encouraged students to join the nation's efforts to promote the development of Taiwan and to sell Taiwan internationally.
