LEGISLATURE TO ADOPT RESOLUTION URGING BEIJING TO DISMANTLE MISSILES

2003-12-15 21:35:38

The ruling Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) , the opposition Kuomintang and the People First Party each has their own proposal.

The proposal from the opposition parties said that although the two sides of Taiwan Strait have enjoyed economic and cultural exchanges over the last 15 years, the military confrontation has impeded the two sides from reaching detente. They also said that the Republic of China (ROC) is a country with sovereignty and its status should not be changed by outside force.

Furthermore, mainland China's deployment of nearly 500 missiles targeting Taiwan is not only a threat to the island, but also makes the Taiwan Strait a hot spot in the Asia-Pacific region, the proposal said.

Taiwan people hope mainland authorities do not deploy new missiles targeting the island in the future, and desire that the existing missiles be dismantled in phases to usher in an era of reconciliation, the proposal added.

Meanwhile, the DPP proposal urged Beijing to respect the ROC's sovereignty and Taiwan people's determination to pursue democracy and peace.

The Legislative Yuan will make a final resolution Tuesday based on these proposals.
