NO PROGRESS ON RECONSIDERATION OF REFERENDUM BILL IN LEGISLATURE
2003-12-12 23:01:07
Taipei, Dec. 12 (CNA) The Executive Yuan's request for the Legislative Yuan to reconsider part of the recently passed referendum bill was delivered to the legislature Friday, but talks among political parties at the Legislative Yuan over when to gather to respond went nowhere.
The negotiations will continue Monday before the Rules Committee under the legislature meets Tuesday to decide whether to put the request on the agenda of a plenary session of the legislature Dec 19.
The legislature has to rally a majority vote to reject the Executive Yuan's request for reconsideration with 15 days or the parts requested to be reconsidered will automatically be annulled.
The Executive Yuan has asked the Legislative Yuan to reconsider 12 out of 64 articles in the referendum bill passed on Nov. 27, calling them unacceptable.
The opposition lawmakers who pushed the bill through with a wafer-thin majority bridled at the request and vowed to turn it down.
