Executive Yuan releases assessment of direct cross-strait links
August 15, 2003
Premier Yu Shyi-kun announced the release of the Executive Yuan's "Assessment of the Impact of Direct Cross-Strait Transportation" during a press conference August 15.
Among his remarks, the premier said, "To actively promote the normalization of cross-strait relations in all areas and to establish a framework with which to pursue peaceful and stable cross-strait relations have been consistent goals of President Chen Shui-bian's administration since his inauguration."
Premier Yu noted that representatives from Taiwan's major political parties and social sectors reached consensus about the three direct links policy during the August 2001 Economic Development Advisory Conference, over which President Chen presided. During the conference, he said, the representatives determined that the policy should include direct aviation and shipping links with the People's Republic of China.
"With this report, the Executive Yuan aims to objectively present the impact the direct links would have on Taiwan's society, politics, and national security, thereby promoting our citizens' understanding of the issue of the three links and its problems, Premier Yu said. "With consensus among the citizens and with full consideration of our national interest and the welfare of the people, the government can carefully plan, prepare, and implement the direct links."
