MAC OFFICIAL SEES NO CHANGE IN U.S. POSITION ON CROSS-STRAIT TIES

2003-12-11 16:03:07

Taipei, Dec. 11 (CNA) Mainland Affairs Council Vice Chairman Chen Ming-tung said Wednesday that from the remarks U.S. government leaders made during Chinese Premier Wen Jiabao's recent visit to Washington, he sees no change in the basic position of the United States on cross-Taiwan Strait relations.

Speaking in a TV interview, Chen said the United States has in fact reiterated the position during Wen's visit to Washington that it does not want either side of the Taiwan Strait to change the status quo. It is the "basic policy" of the United States to keep the situation in the Taiwan Strait area peaceful, Chen added.

Chen also said it is clear to see from the recent remarks of State Department officials that U.S. President George W. Bush is strongly opposed to any coercive means that Beijing may use to force Taiwan change the status quo.
