Weapons of Mass Destruction (WMD)

Taiwan's position on WMD made clear in Washington Times
December 11, 2002

On December 11, 2002, the Washington Times published the following letter to the editor written by Dr. Stephen Chang, spokesman for Taiwan's chief representative office in the United States. In the letter, Dr. Chang responds to an article that appeared in the November 12 edition of the newspaper.

To the editor:

As the spokesman for Taiwan's chief representative office in the United States, I am compelled to correct a mistake in an article that appeared in the November 12 edition of your paper. Alexander G. Higgins' article, "Nations seek reduced germ-warfare threat" listed Taiwan in a list of countries developing biological weapons.

The Republic of China on Taiwan has solemnly declared time and again that it does not produce, develop, seek to acquire, store, or use nuclear, biological, or chemical weapons. My government has pledged to adhere to the Biological Weapons Convention and has taken this pledge seriously.

It is my hope that you will correct this error for the benefit of your readers. Thank you.

Sincerely,

Dr. Stephen Chang
Director
Information Division
Taipei Economic and Cultural Representative Office in the United States
Washington, DC
