TSU WELCOMES PRESIDENT'S `ONE SIDE, ONE COUNTRY' STATEMENT
Aug 03, 2002 18:06 UTC+0800
Taipei, Aug. 3 (CNA) The opposition Taiwan Solidarity Union (TSU) Saturday hailed President Chen Shui-bian for his "one side, one country" comment regarding cross-Taiwan Strait relations made the same day.
Commenting on Chen's speech delivered via video link to the opening of the 29th annual meeting of the World Federation of Taiwanese Associations being held in Tokyo, in which Chen openly stated for the first time Taiwan's stance on the cross-strait relationship, Lee Shang-ren, director of the TSU's policy committee, said that Chen's comment is compatible with former president Lee Teng-hui's idea of a "special state-to-state relationship."
Lee Teng-hui is considered the spiritual leader of the TSU, which is friendly to the ruling Democratic Progressive Party. The TSU holds 13 seats in the 225-member Legislature.
Lee, who is presently in Tokyo accompanying TSU Chairman Huang Chu-wen in participating in the WFTA meeting, told reporters in Taipei by telephone that the TSU welcomes President Chen's statement.
Lee also expressed welcome to President Chen's assertion that Taiwan should walk down its own path and his stressing the urgency for referendum legislation in Taiwan.
The TSU will actively work to push the referendum legislation ahead because the referendum mechanism is a basic human right, Lee emphasized.
