U.S. CONGRESSMAN CALLS FOR U.S. MISSILE PROTECTION OF TAIWAN

Washington, March 30 (CNA) U.S. Rep. David Vitter (R-La.) has introduced a resolution requiring the United States to establish a policy to provide Taiwan and other allies with protection against possible ballistic missile attack.

House Resolution 1283, also dubbed "Defense Against Regional Threats Act 2001," was introduced Wednesday and referred to the House committees on Armed Services and International Relation.

Vitter pointed out that "It is the policy of the United States to provide for deployment as soon as technologically possible of effective missile defense systems capable of defending Israel, Japan, the Republic of Korea, Taiwan and all member nations of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization against ballistic missile attack."

It is the policy of the United States to seek continued negotiated burden-sharing agreements with the above-mentioned nations "to share the costs of development and deployment of ballistic missile defense systems," added the resolution. (By Nelson Chung)
