Taipei, Dec. 16 (CNA) The Ministry of National Defense on Saturday denied reports that Taiwan may be developing nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons of mass destruction.
Vice Defense Minister Sun Tao-yu denied an analysis report released recently by Canada's national security and intelligence bureau that identifies some 10 nations, including Taiwan, as being suspected of developing chemical or biological weapons.
The Canadian intelligence report even pointed out that Taiwan has so far developed 36 types of bacteria to be used for biological warfare.
Calling the report "absolutely wrong," Sun reiterated the Republic of China's set policy of not developing nor owning nuclear, chemical, or biological weapons, stressing that this position will not change.
Sun added, however, that although Taiwan will never develop nor own nuclear, chemical or biological weapons, it has researched and developed anti-chemical and anti-biological warfare equipment and related know-how.
Meanwhile, Sun said, the long-planned Military Procurement Bureau, which will combine the existing Military Procurement Bureau, the military Chungshan Institute of Science and Technology, and the General Headquarters into one agency, is expected to be formally established in one year.
A preparatory department responsible for the planning of the establishment of the cross-sectional bureau, which is expected to have a staff of some 8,000 people, is scheduled to become operational on Feb. 1, Sun added. (By Deborah Kuo)
