Taipei, July 11 (CNA) President Chen Shui-bian is scheduled to preside over a commissioning ceremony for the ROC Air Force's second IDF (indigenous defense fighters) wing on Friday, military sources said on Tuesday.
The commissioning of the No. 433 wing at the Air Force base in Tainan in southern Taiwan will also mark the completion of the delivery of all of the 130 locally built IDF jet fighters, also known as Ching-kuo fighters in memory of the late President Chiang Ching-kuo.
Meanwhile, President Chen will also chair a commissioning ceremony for the Anchorage-class Hsu-hai dock landing ship leased from the United States and three locally built Chinchiang-class offshore patrol ships on July 21.
The joint commissioning ceremony will be held at the Tsoying naval base near the southern port city of Kaohsiung.
Naval sources said the three Chinchiang-class patrol ships belong to the Navy's 131 Fleet based at Keelung in northern Taiwan. Naval authorities have decided to commission the three offshore patrol ships together with the Hsu-hai dock landing ship in a grand ceremony to pledge the Navy's loyalty to the country's new president.
It will also be the first time that President Chen has presided over a naval fleet commissioning ceremony in his capacity as the ROC armed forces' supreme leader. (By Sofia Wu)
