Washington, Sept. 1 (CNA) A US representative has written to Secretary of State Madeleine Albright and Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) Director Louis J. Freeh requesting clarification on why Taiwan was placed on a national security list last year by the FBI.
In a letter dated Aug. 29, Rep. Tom Campbell (R. Calif.) pointed out that "the FBI and the Department of State have given no detailed justification as to why Taiwan has been included on this national security list. I find this troubling and respectfully request clarification for this action, as Taiwan is not typically identified as hostile toward the United States."
Last June, other US representatives called upon Secretary of Justice Janet Reno for clarification of the issue.
Chen Wen-yen, president of the Washington-based Formosan Association for Public Affairs, said "We are disappointed that still nothing has been done. If there are genuine reasons for putting Taiwan on the list, we want to know why, so something can be done about it."
"If Taiwan has been placed on the list merely because the PRC is on the list and because of the fact that the United States maintains a `one China' policy," Chen said, "we demand Taiwan's removal from the list, for Taiwan is not part of China." (By Nelson Chung)
