ROC PLANE MAKERS CAPABLE OF UPGRADING 2ND-GENERATION PLANES: AIDC

Taipei, Aug. 25 (CNA) Local aeronautical engineers and manufacturers are capable of upgrading the combat capability of Taiwan's second-generation jet fighters, a senior official of the Aerospace Industrial Development Corporation (AIDC) said on Friday.

Saying that the capability extends to all the fighters in the ROC fleet, including the Indigenous Defense Fighter (IDF), the F-16 and the Mirage 2000, AIDC Board Chairman Tsai Tsun-hui also expressed confidence over the future of Taiwan's aerospace industry.

Tsai made the remarks at a seminar sponsored by the National Defense Industrial Development Foundation and held in Taipei.

However, he also expressed worry about the future of the aerospace industry in global terms, which he said was in a worldwide decline, but he stressed that local aerospace industrial development will still have a brilliant future if it can sustain itself for another two years.

Addressing the government's appropriation of NT$1 billion for upgrading the combat capability of the country's IDF fighters, Tsai said that the project has not yet been implemented. (By Edward Chen)
