New York, April 2 (CNA) A visiting official of the Republic of China's Democratic Progressive Party said on Sunday that the new administration will honor any international agreements or contracts signed by the previous administration, including its military purchases with the United States.
Chiou I-jen, DPP representative to the US, made the remarks as he prepared to wind up his visit to the United States, which took him to Los Angeles, Washington D. C. and New York.
But Chiou said that he does not know if the US will sell advanced Aegis radar-equipped warships to Taiwan or about the situation regarding the present ROC administration's military purchases from the US.
Chiou said the policy of the new administration of Chen Shui-bian will be continuous and that Chen will honor any agreements reached by the previous government.
On reports in the New York Times that the mainland China is considering a possible compromise, meaning that talks would take place under the "one China" umbrella, but each side would define "China" in its own way, Chiou said that the news has yet to be confirmed.
He also said that Chen's approach and statements since his election victory have won a positive response from the US. But he would not say that tensions don't exist across the Taiwan Strait now, adding that Taiwan has made efforts to reduce tensions and that he hopes the mainland will do the same.
Chiou said that he met with lawmakers, officials, and members of US think tanks during his visit. He stressed that this was a routine visit, saying that he has come to the US seven times since assuming the post of DPP representative to the US.
Though Chiou has kept a low profile since his arrival on March 27, it is believed that he has carried messages from Chen and has tried to establish communication channels between Chen and the US. (By K. C. Huang and Lilian Wu)
