Washington, March 21 (CNA) US Sen. John McCain (R-Ariz.) said Tuesday that the United States must have a vigorous response to Beijing's continued threats against Taiwan, including development of sea-borne missile defense systems for the Taiwanese.
McCain, returning to Capitol Hill Tuesday after his unsuccessful bid for the Republican presidential nomination, told reporters: "I have always favored good trade relations with China. But (I) think we must have a vigorous response to the threats that continue to be made by the Chinese towards Taiwan, exercising a wide variety of options, including the development of sea-borne missile systems."
Meanwhile, the senator said he will ask for a thorough investigation of alleged campaign finance abuses by the 1996 Clinton-Gore re-election campaign and will look forward to campaigning on behalf of a number of candidates running for the US House and Senate who are particularly committed to the campaign finance reform agenda.
McCain added that he intends to support the presidential nominee of the Republican Party but would not accept a vice presidential nomination to run alongside Texas Governor George W. Bush, even if Bush offered it. (By Nelson Chung)
