Singapore, March 20 (CNA) Mainland China's central authorities carried out a survey recently on people's attitudes towards Taiwan independence, Singapore's The Straits Times reported on Monday.
Although the results of the survey were not made public, a source who claimed to have seen the report said that the majority of people in southern mainland China (defined as south of the Yangtze River), said it did not matter to them whether or not Taiwan declared independence.
According to the anonymous source, however, the majority of people in northern mainland China said independence would lead to war.
The difference was said to be because the south would have to bear the brunt of any war with Taiwan, as places like Hong Kong, Shenzhen or Fujian would be hit by Taiwan forces first.
In addition, people in the south, who might be on the frontline, might be the first to see their sons sent to fight, while those in the north feel more remote. (By Sherman Wu)
