MAC HOPES FOR NEW SITUATION IN TAIWAN STRAIT AFTER ELECTION

Taipei, March 18 (CNA) Mainland Affairs Council (MAC) Chairman Su Chi on Saturday urged mainland Chinese authorities to help create a peaceful "win-win" situation across the Taiwan Strait after Taiwan's presidential election.

Stressing that the Republic of China, as a sovereign democratic nation, will not give way to any outside interference and will do its best to ensure that Saturday's presidential election runs smoothly, Su also called on Beijing to maintain a cool head and not resort to military threats.

"The use of force will only lead to more problems," Su pointed out after casting his ballot for the new ROC president at a local polling station.

The MAC head, who is in charge of charting Taiwan's policy toward the mainland, also expressed his confidence that relations between Taiwan and mainland China will embrace a new era after the ROC's tenth president has been elected. (By Flor Wang)
