Taipei, March 15 (CNA) Mainland Chinese Premier Zhu Rongji speech on cross strait issue was Beijing's most severe warning yet to Taiwan's independence advocates, a ruling Kuomintang official said on Wednesday.
Chang Jung-kung, director of KMT's Mainland Affairs Research Department, said Zhu's speech also indicated the "bottom line" between peace and cross-strait war, and added that Beijing will escalate the anti-independence rhetoric to prevent opposition Democratic Progressive Party candidate Chen Shui-bian from winning Saturday's election
Zhu, who made his speech as he was presiding over the closing ceremony of the People's National Assembly in Beijing on Wednesday afternoon, stressed that those who advocate Taiwan independence "will not come to a good end," and added that the Chinese communists "will safeguard the nation's reunification with blood."
Judging from Taiwan's last presidential election in 1996, when Beijing's vocal threats and missile threats led to a landslide victory for President Lee Teng-hui, Chang said, Zhu's speech puts the KMT's Lien Chan in pole position in the race.
In response to Zhu's speech, Chang presented the following three-point declaration:
-- Taiwan's sovereignty will not be interfered with, the election will not be disrupted, and the people have the right to select the president of the nation. The KMT is confident that the Taiwan people will choose the KMT candidate;
-- Lien's 10-point platform on cross strait relations, which won praise at home and abroad, will create a win-win situation for cross-strait relations; and
-- Taiwan independence and "blind action" by Beijing will be the two key factors which can endanger the peace between the two sides of the Taiwan Strait. The KMT has always expressed its opposition to Taiwan independence, and Beijing will not need to implement any dangerous actions against Taiwan if the KMT wins, as the party represents "steady and stable mainstream values" in Taiwan.
